we are doing well.  mike is still experiencing varying degrees of pain throughout a day but he is still talking a little every day and we have scheduled a CT scan to measure and make a skull cap to fit into his head.  the ct is set for tuesday morning and then it will take a few weeks to make it before surgery can be scheduled.  but one step forward is always something to praise.  mike’s parents are in town and enjoying the chance to visit and see him so alert.  keep the concert in mind–i will keep reminding about it on following posts so those interested can scroll back to find and print the poster.  our family will be there to enjoy the night.  hope to see many of you!  in christ, michelle

i don’t have much real news.  mike had a mostly quiet day but besides that he has been consistent about saying a few phrases every day.  it is exciting for anyone who is here to catch him for a conversation to have him respond just in this limited way.  we had yet another incredibly gracious dinner delivered and set up our flowers and candles in mike’s room, sat him up in bed and had an elegant family tv dinner watching charlie brown valentine’s specials.  i explained to mckaela that a valentine tradition is to have dinner with those you love.  we  blessed the meal and thanked God for this special time to be together.

on the horizon, our doctor will be checking in next week to see that mike’s speech is consistent and we may get a speech therapist back out to work toward goals again.  and, dare i say it aloud?  mike has avoided the hospital since those first days of january (could they even forget our name over there?) and i am waiting on word from the neurosurgeons on possibly scheduling the (cosmetic, technically) surgery to get his skull plate put back in.  that surgery hinges on his continued health.  i always wait to see what each day brings but these are tomorrow’s potentials.  pray for all things in perfect time…God’s way.  love and grace,   michelle

my mom was saying good night to mike tonight while i was finishing up his meds and he says “good night”.  all 3 of us grinned (that might be a bit of a mirage with mike but he seemed to muster a slight grin).  i do not get why he says nothing for so long to something so clear.  he went on to “talk” to me a bit answering questions with his classic “sure”, a “pretty much”, and something longwinded i didn’t catch.  i offered to call a brother to say hello and he said he would save it for later.  we ended with i love yous.  and now i head up to sleep, smiling.  pray for continued speech.  and continued health.  joy,   michelle

we are getting better at keeping mike hostage here at home.  he, unfortunately, did catch the flu from me and the kids.  i guess that’s how families share.  he threw up Tuesday morning but didn’t seem to swallow any into his lungs.  (praise God)  and the other lovely effects of stomach flu are tormenting him and the kids still.  but not much of a fever accompanied it and i am always glad to have avoided the hospital.  before the flu hit him he has been trying to speak a very little bit and my hope is that as he continues to try again he will get stronger and more intelligible and we can actually work on speech again (it has taken a back seat with his vow of silence the last month or so.  laura–we will try putting all that training back into practice!  don’t think we’ve forgotten you).                 thanks for upholding us in prayer.  even our providence in our porch cooler was extra special with an added “feel better” care package .   it is so good to be able t count on your care and prayer.  peace, michelle

ps     i will be posting more news on a special benefit concert my childhood church is collaborating on for March 24 in the south suburbs.  Sarah Van Drunen is performing and blessing us with the proceeds.  mark the date if possible and i will post info when possible!

mike is attentively watching the super bowl.  the nice thing about his fevers is that he doesn’t experience much pain, but now that he is better it is back to muscle tension and moaning.  meanwhile, i counted my miracles a little too soon and do have the flu.  my mom is holding down the fort helping the kids (who are both experiencing some flu effects) while i do mike’s stuff.  thanks for caring for us, michelle

mike had a normal temp last night (slightly low) and is a nice 98 today.  hurray!  he does have some congestion so maybe? he was fighting a slight cold?  but we are in the clear for the moment for keeping him at home.  he is doing well.  very alert and awake most of the day with some naps.  he is not speaking or communicating much but he is always watching and presumably listening.  to clear up old questions.  rafael had to move on to a different job because he was not eligible for my non-for-profit program that we are currently using to help with the cost of homecare.  that is why we went through the program itself for them to find an eligible daytime caregiver.  Don is working out wonderfully though he is not allowed to administer medication so there is still some responsibility for me even when he is here.  but it lets me leave the house with the kids and use some freedom.

my young life leader weekend was a complete delight.  i did feel pretty inadequate in speaking but God blessed me and others throughout the weekend so i didn’t feel too bad about it.  i did feel like i was playing hooky (sp?) without mike or the kids.  mike’s brother’s family kept mike company and everythng went great.  poor mckaela and eli took turns being sick–eli with an ear infection and mickaela finally got diagnosed with pneumonia and ear infections.  then eli picked up a quick but ferocious flu bug thursday night.  a blur of laundry and disinfecting has left me dazed but grateful that no one has a fever in our house for the first time in 2 1/2? weeks (and we are talking fevers of 104-105 degrees, none of that pansy lower stuff!)!  i count it a pure miracle of your prayer that i didn’t get sick myself or hurt one of my kids despite the perpetual crying, whining, neediness surrounding me at every turn!  keep us covered, please oh please!

peace!  michelle

2/1/07 Prayer Request

Mike has had a fever for a day or so, which has subsided for the most part, but not entirely.  He is holding a little under 101, but had been up to 105 before ibuprofen and tylenol apparently worked to bring it down.  Of course, we are hoping and praying that a hospital stay will not become necessary.  Please pray over this situation.

It is important that the use of antibiotics to combat infection be limited, as Mike’s doctors have begun to see some of these drugs becoming less and less effective (in turn, limiting their treatment options).  Please pray for strength and PROGRESS, in order that Mike will become less and less dependent on the effectiveness of the antibiotics altogether, and in order that therapy can be reintroduced.

Thanks and God bless you.
