Mike remains at Edward for now.  He still has a fever, though it is unclear what the cause is.  Apparently, it could either be an infection or a drug reaction.  In any case, Mike seemed comfortable today, and he was fairly alert during an evening visit.  He is in Room 408, and visitors are welcome, as always.

Have a happy and safe New Year’s celebration.  God bless.

early 12/24/06

it is officially Christmas eve right now and unfortunately mike will not be able to spend the holiday at home.  he is receiving antibiotics in the hospital right now for a bladder infection and a slight pneumonia and will likely stay for a few days.  he is still a little sleepy but improved.  The kids and i brought a little tree and nativity craft kaela made to decorate the room.  we are not feeling dismal.  i figure 2000 years ago mary and joseph spent Christmas where they didn’t want to be and God still met them there.  tidings of good news and great joy.  make no mistake–God is with us.  peace abundant,  michelle

Mike was admitted to Edward last night around midnight. Some tests are being run to determine the cause of the fever, which is believed to be a bladder infection, and to rule out any other more serious infections.  Please pray that Mike may be able to be home on Christmas day, or very soon thereafter.

God bless.

Mike visited the Edward ER last night, after he developed a fever around 101.  It was hoped that he could have an antibiotic IV administered, and that he could then return home, without being admitted to the hospital.  Please keep this situation in prayer.   (We will post another update as soon as possible to let you know where things stand today.)

we were so lucky to get a visit from mike’s old friend from high school, Tom Nugent, who drove in from Ohio today.  mike has been a bit extra weak today and seemed oddly unresponsive depite the visit.  we checked and he has developed a fever this evening.  we are keeping an eye on him and hoping it does not develop into anything.  pray for his health.  pray for his resilience.  pray that we are able to keep him home and take care of his needs here.  trusting, michelle

we had some sweet old friends over last night telling stories and making michael smile as he listened.  it has been a little while since i saw him smile.  he still looked asleep but apparently he sits quietly waiting for a punchline.  for the most part he is still not communicating much–a sentence or 2 a day.  but that is improvement.  he is discharged from active therapy due to lack of participation so we are responsible for exercising him ourselves every day to retain his range.  he is experiencing some more pain than usual with episodes of muscle rigidity.  it sometimes makes him cry out a bit or moan but usually passes in about 10 minutes.  mckaela sat with me and sang to him during one of these moments today.

every day has its trials–there is no reason to pretend otherwise–but “his grace is sufficient for me”, for us.  amen and thanks.

sometimes i catch myself repeating the same story to different people and i realize it is because it summarizes life, or blessing or perspective for me.  i cannot get it off my mind because it fuels me or points me back to the Father in some way.  this week, when a dear dinner deliverer dropped off her regular anonymous monday fare i happened to catch her and drag her in for a quick visit.  mckaela was lost in a nap and eli had followed me to the door.  i asked him to show her where daddy was and he turned tail and led her straight through the hallway, turned through the kitchen and headed straight over to mike’s bed.  i have described what i see as eli falling in love with mike.  mike is so limited in how he can actively love eli and eli was still so little the last time mike could pick him up or swaddle and comfort him.  it is beyond explanation how eli has come to desire, clutch for, seek out mike.  he inherently knows and longs to be close to his daddy.  may it be so for each of us with our own heavenly dad.

by the way, mike is still hanging in there.  my hunch is that progress will be slow or below my radar to report for a while.  this is not horrible, simply the reality.  mike is still weak and finding it difficult to actively move his muscles, limbs, etc. much.  we will continue exercising him for him to maintain range of motion but he will only get stronger as he moves muscles himself.  i use mcKaela to try flashcards and funny faces with him.  she is persistent and influential…my best bet.  but your prayer is our foundation.  please keep us covered.  thanks and blessings,  michelle

Life is so blessed.  God is so good.  mike is doing really well.  he is back up in his wheelchair occasionally in a day.  he is attempting speech again–sometimes intelligibly, sometimes not.  he is physically healthy and his foot sores etc. are healing slowly.  he is still unlikely to convey much enthusiasm or feeling but we are enjoying hanging out with mike.  the kids are all over him and the soundtrack of their play is inescapable whether mike is appreciating it or not.  he is still gradually “looking” more awake and alert day by day but he is awake much more often than he looks it.

our polar bear weekend with high school kids was such joy–i was able to hang out with and talk with a great group of girls as we searched for what it means to walk with Christ every day.  i even got to make snow angels!!  the Z parents and Rafael held down the fort with mike with flying colors.  i was glad they didn’t get to meet our friendly paramedics and Michael minded his manners for them.  So many many many thanks for the prayer coverage that covered us from state to state.

as for visits… mike is home all the time so someone is here at all times.  it is hard to know what is going on in the house at any given time.  we get visits almost daily from an assortment of nurses, therapists, deliveries, etc.  and if i am able to catch a nap with the kids we will sneak away for that treasure.  but if you want to try to stop by and see if someone answers the door, then feel free.  if you want to call first to check that out, feel free.  it is hard to provide specific visiting hours since so much changes day to day.  if  i am seeing any problems i will bring up more specific advice for visits.

thanks and love,  michelle
