Mike’s condition has not changed substantially over the last couple of days. On Monday morning, a tracheostomy was performed to allow for continued assistance in breathing without further stress on Mike’s vocal cords (caused by prolonged intubation). The procedure, of course, requires anaesthesia and pain medication, which can reduce responsiveness, so it is unsurprising that Mike has not been very responsive lately.

Within the next few days, there will be continuing efforts to slowly withdraw ventilator support, so that Mike can breathe unassisted. Already, he is undergoing short “trials” wherein his ability to breathe on his own is being monitored. Pray that Mike will progress quickly in this regard, and that he will soon be entirely non-ventilator-dependent. This would be a preferable condition for Mike as different long-term rehabilitation options are considered.

As you know, the focus of the ICU has been to stabilize Mike’s condition following surgery, and he has been considered fairly stable, for some time. The focus must now shift to Mike’s rehabilitation, and it is likely that he will soon be transferred to another facility that specializes in coma stimulation therapy. Different alternatives are now being considered, including a facility in downtown Chicago which is supposed to have a very good program. Please pray that Mike will be considered to be a good candidate for the program, and that this will be an available option for his ongoing treatment.

Many have inquired as to how they could make a contribution to help Mike and Michelle with expenses at this difficult time. It is impossible to know at this time how long it will be before Mike can return to work, and of course Michelle is taking care of McKaela and Eli. Obviously, there will be considerable medical expenses associated with Mike’s care, both recent and long-term. If you would like to make a contribution, you may send it to:

Michelle Zegarski
c/o Harris Bank Naperville
1284 Rickert Drive
Naperville, IL 60540
(630)527-2144

Any Harris Bank branch may also receive contributions.

Please note that financial concerns are still being addressed, and it may become advantageous at some point to establish a trust or to otherwise change the manner of receiving contributions. If you have any questions or concerns relating to a contribution, you may call Dan Zegarski at (513) 651-4226 prior to sending it.

Mike and Michelle deeply appreciate any contribution and, most importantly, your ongoing prayer.

“THIS is the air I breathe,…YOUR holy presence, living in me…I am desperate for You, I’m lost without You”

We will pray that Mike is able to go to the location where he will have the best care, the best doctors, nurses, we will pray that it will be close, we pray that he will go where God wants him to go,…we will mostly pray that God will use him wherever he is moved.

I Will Praise You in this Storm, by Casting Crowns

    I was sure by now
That You would have reached down
    And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say “Amen”
    and it’s still raining

    As the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
    “I’m with you”
    And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God
    Who gives and takes away

    Chorus:
I’ll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
    No matter where I am
    Every tear I’ve cried
    You hold in Your hand
    You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

    I remember when
    I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry You raised me up again
    My strength is almost gone
    How can I carry on
    If I can’t find You

    As the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
    “I’m with you”
    And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God
    Who gives and takes away

    Chorus

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

    Repeat

    Chorus

To the Zegarski family and friends and especially, Michelle:
I feel privileged to have married into such a family of faith! And I have received such great blessings over and over from knowing you, Michelle and Mike. Mike is the brother I always prayed and hoped for! (And how lucky am I to have two more!)

The presence of the Lord is alive in you, Michelle and in all of us praying for Mike! But I believe the Lord is most alive in Mike. I was telling some friends just the other day, who are praying daily for you and Mike, that I’m not sure I’ve ever known anyone who has done more for the cause of Christ than Mike! All these beautiful e-mails, I believe, is evidence of that!

Thank you to all of you praying for our entire family. (Keep sending those prayers up daily!) I am overwhelmed, although not at all surprised, by the love so many have shown. Through the love you shower on Mike and Michelle, we feel loved, too!

Michelle, give McKaela Caterpillar and sweet Eli kisses from Aunt Heather, Uncle Dan and Will. We love you so much.

    Heather Z.
